"Science is always philosophy at the beginning and art at the end."
Roger Guillemin. Nobel Prize of Medicine 1977

Juan Luis Castillo botanical artist

Welcome to my website. Here you will find an example of my work as a botanical illustrator with over eighteen years of experience in scientific illustration.

I studied biology, graduating in 1989. In 1993 I began to collaborate in the Flora Iberica Project sponsored by the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, where I have been trained in the European tradition of scientific botanical illustration, showing a special interest for threatened plants from Spain and from all over the world.

I am a self-taught illustrator and during my career I have been dedicated to illustrate scientific texts. Most of my work shows the collaboration with scientist from the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid.

My work has been published in over fifty scientific botanical papers, seventeen books (eleven of them as the only illustrator), eleven PhDs, four catalogs and two field guides.

In 2009, some of my geranium′s plates have been selected to be included in volume eleven of the Flora of China Illustrations, published by Missouri Botanical Garden.

I have collaborated, as a botanical illustrator, in Flora Iberica, Flora Liquenologica Iberica, Flora Mycologica Iberica, Flora de Cuba, Flora of the Guianas, Plan CUSSTA and last but not least in two taxonomic projects illustrating the genus Geranium (Geraniaceae) and the genus Acalypha (Euphorbiaceae).

I use, mainly, pen and ink and gouache, although in recent times I have specialized in digital illustration. Using both, live or dried specimens preserved in the herbarium, I have always been concerned to represent the scientific and artistic essence of the plants in my illustrations.

I have been member of The Society of Botanical Artists and the American Society of Botanical Artists, receiving numerous international awards, including one gold and one silver gilt medal from the Royal Horticultural Society of London in the early 2000's along with the prestigious "Jill Smithies Award for excellence in scientific botanical drawing" from the Linnean Society in 2001.

My work has been exhibited and collected for particulars and institutions from Spain and from all over the world.
